TOP 4 SEEDS ADVANCE IN BERGEN COUNTY GIRLS TOURNEY By Kristen Gillies Teaneck looked like the No. 1 out of the gate as the Highwaywomen exploded to a 19-0 lead and went on to defeat Cresskill 57-47 in the pre-quarterfinals of the Bergen County Girls Basketball Tournament on Sunday (February 7). The Lady Cougars found the range and ran off 16 straight points to tie the score at 23-23 by the halftime intermission. The Highwaywomen pulled away in the second half to win by 10 points as Jakelle King-Gilchrist netted a team-high 19 points and Sydni Lester contributed an 18-point effort. Carly Cerone, who scored her 1000th career point in the Lady Cougars’ 53-23 victory over Saddle River Day on Thursday (February 4) topped the Lady Cougars’ scoring column, tossing 16 into the bucket. Sarah Halejian and Deanna Devonshuk powered second-seeded Ramapo to a 49-30 triumph over Fair Lawn. Halejian dominated in the paint, finishing with 11 points, five rebound and three blocked shots while Devonshuk scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Terry Ely turned in a double-double effort to propel third-seeded Pascack Valley to a 52-34 victory over Hackensack. Ely tickled the twine with a game-high 25 points, 11 of which came at the charity stripe while grabbing 14 rebounds, passing off five assists and picking off four steals. On Thursday (February 4), Ely recorded the first triple-double in PV history when she scored 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and distributed 10 assists in a 60-49 triumph over Holy Angels Her teammate Dana Amato also registered a double-double as netted 10 points and hauled down 10 rebounds. No. 4 Northern Valley/Old Tappan coasted to a 62-47 victory over Pascack Hills as Shannon Funsch tallied 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and passed off five assists. Alex Redetzky produced a double-double as the 6-1 senior center scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds while blocking three shots. Karli McMenamin made it a trio of Golden Knights in double figures as she scored 13 points, hauled down eight rebounds and blocked three shot, Fifth-seeded Holy Angels rallied from a five point deficit with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter to pull away to a 66-46 triumph over Mahwah. Melanie Lockett topped the Angels in scoring with 18 points and handed off five assists while Jackie Jerkovich scored 17 points and Jillian Crawford shipped in with a 13-point effort and grabbed eight rebounds. River Dell, the sixth seed, experienced little trouble in downing New Milford 40-23 as Meghan Cotter scored a dozen points and grabbed nine rebounds, Kate Brock chipped in with a 10-point performance while junior forward Kristen Eckert pulled down nine rebounds. Samantha DeFreeze led the Lady Knights with 10 points. Seeded No. 7, Paramus Catholic defeated Glen Rock 59-47 as senior guard Rae Corbo tallied 10 of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter when the Lady Paladins went on a 17-10 run to snap a 22-22 deadlock at the break. Lauren Milligan hit the hoop with 13 points and Jamie Klein finished with 11 while Jen Berland was high for the Lady Panthers, flipping 13 points through the rim. Ninth-seeded St. Mary/Rutherford ousted Immaculate Heart Academy from the tourney, handing the Blue Eagles a 51-47 setback, Martina Ellerber turned in a double-double to ignite the Lady Gaels, hitting the hoop with 18 points and the boards form 10 rebounds while blocking three shots. In non-tourney action, senior guard Krystak Polyi tied the Fair Lawn school record when she connected on seven treys from down town as she scored a game-high 23 points to propel the Cutters to a 66-38 victory Paterson Eastside on Thursday (February 4).
