(Scroll Down for Softball, Golf, Volleyball, Tennis, Weightlifting) BASEBALL Ironmen Conclude “Perfection” By Dennis Wilson Bergen County dominated the 2008 scholastic baseball campaign and Don Bosco Prep was at the forefront as the Ironmen defeated Christian Brothers Academy 5-4 in the NJSIAA Non-Public A championship game on Saturday, January 7 to finish with a 33-0 record. Chris Picyk singled and set up the winning run in the sixth inning when he drew an errant pickoff throw, allowing Mike O’Keefe to score from third base. Don Bosco Prep held on to a 3-2 triumph over Seton Hall Prep in the North Jersey finals when left fielder Brett Knief, who had two hits and scored a run, pegged out the potential tying run at the plate to end the game. Northern Valley/Old Tappan made its first appearance in a NJSIAA championship finale a winning one by routing Wall Township 16-4. Senior James Puglia hurled four innings of six-hit ball and aided his own cause at the plate when he doubled and legged out a three-bagger to plate five runs. In the Group III semifinals, Tyler Gallo fueled Old Tappan’s six-run outburst in the sixth when he went deep, launching a three-run homer that pushed the Golden Knights into a 12-8 advantage. James Puglia chipped in with three hits and knocked in four runs. Glenn Flora went 6 1/3 innings, allowing only three hits as Lyndhurst won the Group I title with a 7-3 victory over Robbinsville. Lyndhurst snapped a scoreless tie in the third when Evan Levario tripled with the sacks filled. Flora connected for a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th as Lyndhurst rallied to edge Park Ridge 4-3 in the Group I semifinals. Ryan Howard had doubled in a run in the top of the 11th to stake the Owls to a 3-2 lead. Mahwah was runnerup in Group II when Allentown defeated the Thunderbirds 11-6 in the finals. Zac Palmer blasted a two-run round-tripper and and Anthony Psanello smashed a 400-foot solo homer to propel the Thunderbirds to a 7-6 triumph over Hanover Park in the Group II semifinals. Daniel O’Neill fanned 13 while scattering seven hits and walking three as St. Mary/Rutherford defeated St. Mary/Jersey City 8-3 in the North Jersey Non-Public B final. Playing for the Non-Public B title, the Gaels dropped a 8-4 verdict to St. Rose/Belmar. Senior Julia Rappa carded Ridgewood’s low 18-hole round of 84 while her classmate Eunae Jo turned in a 86 for a winning team total of 170. Bergen Catholic edged Ridgewood for the Group 3-4 team title in the 2008 Nasser Bergen County Team Championship when the Crusaders won on the first playoff hole after the teams had deadlocked at 340 each at the end of regulation. Mahwah easily won the Group 1-2 title, posting the low score of 325 over the Darlington Golf Course in Mahwah. Glen Rock pulled away from the seven-team field to repeat as team champion in the 2008 B-PSL Golf Championship contest at the Rockleigh Golf Club. Sophomore Greg Andrake and junior Chuck Stewart paced the Panthers to a 17 stroke lead over runnerup Eastern Christian by finishing 1-2 in the individual standings. Junior setter Doug Battersby excelled in defeat, distributing 39 assists as the Ironmen finished the campaign with a 26-6 record.
