BASEBALL GREEN KNIGHTS ROMP TO BERGEN DIAMOND CROWN Seeded No. 2, St. Joseph Regional/Montvale cruised to the 2009 Bergen County Baseball Tournament championship on Saturday, May 30, crushing fifth-seeded Ramapo 10-0 in a game curtailed in the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. Senior southpaw Rich Anastasi went the distance in raising his mound mark to 9-1. He scattered three singles, walked no one and fanned nine as he blanked a good-hitting Ramapo batting order. Kevin Ferguson, a senior pitcher/first sacker, was selected the tourney MVP while Brian Bullard launched a round-tripper to highlight a Green Wave outburst of six runs in the bottom of the fifth that concluded the title contest. In the semifinals, Ramapo ousted top-seeded Don Bosco Prep 6-0 as the Green Raiders pushed four runs across the plate in the first inning, keyed by a two-run homer off the bat of senior third baseman Tommy Breault who launched his school career-record ninth round-tripper. Seniors Anthony Gomez and Brett Knief limited the Ironmen to a pair of singles and both runners were caught stealing by junior catcher Myles Amador, who made his first varsity start a memorable one. Rob Frank allowed three hits, all by leadoff better Vin Fiori, and whiffed five as he went the distance in hurling the Green Wave to a 1-0 triumph over Ramsey in the other semifinal bracket. Ken Post broke up a no-hitter when he singled to open the seventh. In the top of the ninth, seventh-seeded Pascack Valley pushed two runs across the plate. Top-seeded Immaculate Heart Academy rallied to walk off with a 3-2 victory in the bottom of the ninth as the Blue Eagles captured the 2009 Bergen County Softball Tournament championship banner Sunday, May 24 on the campus of Ramapo College in Mahwah. Christina Miquel was the star of the game as she hurled nine innings, scattering six hits to claim the W” on the mound after she trotted around the bases in the bottom of the ninth following the launching of the game-winning round-tripper that plated Jen Keller and Juliette D’Ambrosio. Pascack Valley had moved out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the inning following a RBI double by losing pitcher Brittany DeMai and an RBI single off the bat of Dana Amato. It was the second straight Group III championship banner for the Maroons who upped their overall record to 16-6. Seniors Sam Muller and Ryan Polak netted four goals apiece with Muller distributing four assists. Sam Diss, Michael Giordano and Matt Zacoroli added solo goals while senior keeper Brad Macnee stopped six shots on goal. In the Group III semifinals, Ridgewood bridged the second and third quarters with a 7-2 run in defeating Montgomery 10-6. Diss and Ryan Mansbach each tallied two goals while Luke Cicholcki, Giordano, Ryan Jorgenson, Patrick Kiernan and Muller contributed solo goals. Ridgewood began its trek to the title with a 16-6 rout of Morristown, scoring four goals in each quarter, Muller netted three goals and dished off three assists while Polak scored three times and was credited with a pair of assists. Diss and Giordano added two goals apiece with Chicholki, Jake Hutchins, Jorgenson, Kiernan and Mansbach recording goals. Glen Rock completed its season with a flourish as the Panthers romped to a 14-2 romp over Wallkill Valley on Thursday (May 28), Tom Burke, Alex Colaitis and Chip Morel turned in a hat trick performances, netting three goals apiece with Morel distributing three assists. Jack Arpert, Mike Castellano, Mike Escalante, Ted Palm and Alex Tahinos chipped in with solo goals. Indian Hills went to overtime in edging Mahwah 11-10 as Zac Smith scored five times and dished off a pair of assists for the Braves. Steve Gentile and Bruce Pirie added two goals each with Jessie Moscatello and Craig Tomat completing the scoring. Mark Glicini scored five times for the Thunderbirds with Joe Kearney and Sean Kelley adding two goals apiece. -- GIRLS LAX LADY MAROONS SURGE TO BERGEN COUNTY TOURNAMENT TIARA Ridgewood exploded to a 10-1 lead by the halftime intermission in defeating Immaculate Heart Academy 14-7 in the championship game of the Bergen County Girls’ Lacrosse Tournament in Franklin Lakes. With freshman Kelci Smesko and sophomore Sammy Giordano netting five goals apiece to fuel the first half outburst, the outcome was never in doubt. Smesko finished with a game-high seven goals while Giordano netted six with each dishing off an assist. Completing the scoring parade was Allison Bonanno while Casey Bakkerm Samantha Cermack and Lauren Wilson were credited with two assists apiece. Goalie Shannon Higgins made nine saves as the Lady Maroons upped their overall record to 15-2. Glen Rock rocked Indian Hills 15-9 as Meghan Callanan tallied four goals. Valerie Litt, who distributed four assists, Jamie Marino, Charlotte Suozzi, Jackie Tozzi and Samantha Trotta contributed two assists apiece. Evan O’Neill targeted 11 goals into the Cutters’ cage to spur Northern Highlands to a 17-8 triumph over Fair Lawn. Aurbey Rubino chipped in with three goals and three assists for the Lady Highlanders.
